Survey says...

Well, you guys are really helpful! The two choices are neck in neck - basically a tie so far! So I am still wanting to hear your opinion, in case you haven't left it yet. Here are the survey results so far:

Homeschooling on a Dime - 13
What You Child Needs to Know When - 14

Thank you so much for posting your thoughts. Keep 'em coming - they are priceless!

Terri, I was an oddball among my friends who seemed to know exactly what she wanted...I just wanted to know how to find it cheaply. A friend gave me a copy of The Well Trained Mind when my son was just 5 and it covered scope and sequence SO WELL. I knew it was for me. HOWEVER, I would like to cast a vote for "What Your Child Needs to Know When" to represent the dozens of friends I know that would be voting that option. If I were just starting out today, it would probably be my bigger need as well due to the huge amount of information and publications out there.....I wouldn't know where to start if I hadn't already started!

I personally like the idea of BOTH topics, but if I had to choose (and I reckon I do!) I would choose What Your Child Needs to Know When, as it seems to be more elusive information that Homeschooling on a Dime. I read over the first lesson last night and I LOVED it! I so wish I had something like that in the beginning--it would have taken much of the pressure off!

Hi, Terri~

I would say that most of the questions I hear are more related to "What should I use? How come the School Department doesn't just tell me what to teach? I don't know where to start?"

Therefore, I think that a good "starter" would be:
What Your Child Needs to Know and When

Based on your first lesson, I'm excited to see what you have to offer (And what I can recommend) to folks who are pulling their kids out of Public and/or private school.

Blessings~

I would cast my vote for "What My Child Needs to Know"...I don't consider myself new to homeschooling anymore, but when I was, I was far more concerned about what I needed to teach than how much it was going to cost. It wasn't until after I figured that out that cutting costs became an issue. :o)

I would vote for What My Child Needs to Know.. I agree with Shanna about when I first started homeschooling I wanted to make sure that I was teaching what they needed to know and the fear of not doing enough or not doing it at the right time was very evident then.. The cost issue really didn't become an issue until years later really!

another for the "needs to know" option! this is something we have had a hard time getting a handle on, and when we did, it was very reassuring to find out that our chidlren did know what they needed (and more) for their age. :)

Terri,

I think these are both great topics, especially with many needing to tighten things up with today's economy. However, I would definitely recommend What Your Child Needs to Know When. This topic seems to be the most stressful to new homeschoolers. They don't start worrying about the financial aspect until after they've figured out what they need to teach and the materials to do it!

OOPS! Just sent you an email, but realize I should have come here. I vote for: What You Child Needs to Know When.

Since you're targeting newbie homeschoolers, I'd go with What Your Child Needs to Know When. That's a topic of hot concern with the newcomers to our support group.

Ok, I am so for the hsing on a dime. Esp. with the economy as it is. I know way too many new homeschoolers who go out and buy everything but the kitchen sink before they even know what works best for their kids. So I guess I just tied this up with a vote for HSing on a dime-

Because so many newbies are especially worried that they can't teach all the children need to know and because even us oldies get a twitch now and then, I suggest "What your child needs to know when". Though the other topic is a good one, I hear other moms telling me the freebies they have found on their own.
Godd luck!
